Derived meaning of Rangoli = Rang (color) + aavali (rows) = Rows of colors. Though today in most part of India this art is known as Rangoli, it is also know as Kolam, Madanae, Chowkpurna, Alpana, Aripana in many other parts of India, is a traditional decorative folk art of India.
These are decorative designs of mango/ keri, flowers, peacocks are made on floors of living rooms and courtyards during Hindu festivals and are meant as sacred welcoming areas for the Hindu deities. Traditionally Rangoli is made using powdered colors. But in these days many different items like flowers, pulses, grains are used to make different designs to give a 3 D effect.

So you would say derived meaning for Deepavali = Deep (candles) + aavali (rows) = Rows of candle.... well yes thats how it is..
